Tip Top B-HOP

by Eric G. Satterwhite

Approximately three decades ago my father connected me  with a gig at his State of New Jersey employment locale to earn some summer greenbacks {Middlesex County} while home from college. During the weekly new-hire job orientation~~ I struck a daily conversation with a young lady from Newark, NJ on varied subjects with the prime emphasis on boxing albeit.

This alert/communicative/witty young lady shared that her cousin was a fight promoter  named Murad Muhammad~~ and I recall mentioning  a time may manifest when she will probably work for/with Mr. Muhammad.

Murad Muhammad,  an innovative prize fight promoter was the first brother of African-American descent to receive a promoter's license in the State of New Jersey. Not one to waste State certification~~ Murad promoted/televised a boxing match (HBO) from Rahway State Prison the 1st from the inside (literally right down the street from my summer job). The scrap featured ranked fighter/prisoner James Scott and future Light Heavyweight champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad known then as Eddie Gregory . Murad is also credited with grounding the first Heavyweight Championship fight in 50 years in the Garden State headlined by Champion Larry Holmes and challenger Scott Frank  (during the 80's). Murad's entry; into big-time boxing was facilitated by Muhammad Ali. Murad's connection as  personal security  to the 'greatest' was an alliance Murad commenced at the age of 16.

Where are we going with this ?

Simple.

The aforementioned young lady is currently Mrs. Bernard Hopkins whose husband is arguably the greatest tactical fighter in pugilism annals and at 48 years of age~~ the oldest ever to hold/win a World Championship belt.

Hopkins a bewilderment of dedicated discipline, ring command, geometrical punching angles, feinting footwork, and extrasensory intelligence/instincts has overcome youthful travails~~ that lead to a long term prison incarceration~~ and is now globally honored as not letting anyone define his personal timeline. Hopkins core principle of mental mastery (the astute study of his opponent's psyche) bullet proofs his Champion injury proof ethos. Hopkins has inspired many not to succumb to others notions of age relevance~~ and has Mrs. Hopkins as a prime daily motive~~ in maintaining the Executioner's effervescence effectiveness elegance prized pressure prominence.

It was duly doubtless during a job orientation years ago that the man who wedded (with immense due respect) this proactive 'ride or die young lady' with light behind her eyes~~ had the support mechanism to conquer the world.

When traveling the corridor called the journey of life~~ its important to pay attention to all that one encounters.

Again, write your own timeline.

Props to B-HOP and the naturally 'I'm always in your corner' Mrs. Hopkins!

 My word is bond....

Bernard's message is Cloud and clear

American defies Father Time to win IBF title aged 48

BERNARD HOPKINS added a new chapter to his illustrious career last night by winning the IBF world title — at the grand old age of 48.

Hopkins defied Father Time once again to defeat Tavoris Cloud via unanimous decision at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
And the veteran light-heavyweight believes the shock defeat could be something Cloud never bounces back from.
He said: “I just wanted to use my speed and reflexes which I still have at 48.
“I stuck to the plan, I just took a little time to get warmed up.
“I said before the fight I was going to work on combination punches. I was trying to throw four or five extra punches that I don’t normally throw.
“I’m fighting old school in a new world. I have to learn to adapt to what [the judges] are looking for.
“We knew a 31-year-old guy was not going to run from a 48-year-old guy.”
Cloud was left with a mountain to climb in the sixth round when he suffered a deep cut to his left eye following a clash of heads.
Despite B-Hop’s reputation for rough-house tactics, referee Earl Brown ruled the collision was accidental – and did so again after the champion was bloodied above his right eye in the 12th.
Cloud did all he could to retain the title, but the simple fact was Hopkins outclassed him.
And it came as no surprise when The Executioner was given the nod on all three scorecards.
Hopkins added: “He’s a gutsy, young champion.
“But I have a history of destroying young champions and then we don’t see them again.
“I’m not sure if you’ll see Cloud again.”
While Cloud would not be drawn on his future, the disappointment of losing to a fighter 17 years his senior was hard to hide.
He said: “I was only average tonight.
“He hit me with an elbow but I’m not complaining. It is what it is.”
